The Litte Rubber Shark
by Sharon J Bryant

When my son was only 4 years old, he carried in his pocket a little rubber shark about 3 inches long.  Each morning when he put on his new britches for the day, the little rubber shark went into his pocket.  When he was almost 6 years old, he had his shark in his jeans pocket when he died in an accident.  The hospital gave me his clothes and inside the pocket nestled in the corner was his shark.

Afterwards, I put the shark in his top drawer with all his socks and underwear.  his room was off limits to anyone who came into the house.  Alone, daily, I would go in his room, touch his bed, his toys, and always open the drawer and look at his little shark.

It was about three months after the accident.  It was a terrible day for me, crying and missing him.  I was washing clothes and I went to get the clothes out of the washer, and as I got the last garment out, there was the little rubber shark at the bottom of the washer.  No one else lived in the house except my husband, our dog and myself.  I know my husband never went into Andy's room.  And I know the dog did not open a drawer or a washing machine and put the little shark into it.

I never found out how that shark got into that washer, I'd like to think it was Andy's way of saying, "I'm ok, here's proof of it!"

I'd like to take a moment to tell you about my special little man, Scott.  He was my only child and, at age 25, the only child I'd ever have.  Scott was my purpose for living in so many ways.  But, at age 6-1/2, he was taken from this life and given a new one that will never be taken away.  He was killed in a car accident on July, 1988.

One of my most treasured memories is the one that happened Memorial Day, six weeks before the accident.  While boating on the lake, a 5-year old boy drowned and we were all talking about how hard it must have been on the mom and dad.  After we arrived home from the trip, we learned that Scott's dog, Rosco, had died from a heart problem.  Scott was so sad at first, when I told him what had happened.  then Scott's face seemed to light up; he said, "I guess God wanted Rosco in heaven so that the little boy that drowned wouldn't be lonely."  Then he paused and said, "But when I get to heaven, that's still my dog!"

Within 4 weeks of Scott's death, his other dog was killed when she got loose from her fence.  This has given me a peace that I know Scott isn't lonely.

I just wanted to share this with you all ...
